(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On 17-Nov-2019, a 1.8 year old, 70 pound, intact, male, Retriever - Labrador/Pit Bull crossbred dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was administered 1 application of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (Phenothrin) via the topical route by the animal owner. The product was thoroughly rinsed off the dog and no known ingestion occurred. The product was administered as a prevention and it was a first time use. Approximately 2 hours post administration, the dog developed vomiting. The animal owner contacted a veterinarian and they recommended having the dog drink flat Ginger Ale but the animal owner did not administer it to the dog. The vomiting continued and on 18-Nov-2019, the dog developed adipsia and bloody diarrhea, which persisted throughout the night. In the morning of 19-Nov-2019, the dog died at home. The dog was not evaluated by a veterinarian and no treatments were performed. It is unknown if a necropsy was performed.
Death
Assessment: The active ingredient in the product is present at low concentration and has a wide margin of safety in dogs. If a small amount of product was ingested during bathing or via grooming only mild GI upset would be expected. Severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea persisting until death is not expected. Other causes should be considered including infectious disease, GI foreign body, dietary indiscretion or other exposure considering the young age of the dog. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and can not form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
