On 08-Oct-2019, a 3 year old, 55 pound, intact, female, Pit Bull dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical conditions, was administered 1 application of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo for Dogs (Phenothrin) via the topical route by the animal owner. On 12-Oct-2019, the dog exhibited weight loss, lethargy, vomiting and then collapsed. The dog was evaluated by a veterinarian, CPR was performed but was unsuccessful, and the dog died. No further information was received in this case.
Death
Assessment: The active ingredient is present in very low concentration in this product and has a wide margin of safety in dogs. Mild GI upset may occur if the product is ingested during bathing but are not expected to begin 4 days after product use. Weight loss, collapse, and death are not expected. Other causes including underlying infectious disease, GI foreign body with perforation, gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV), metabolic disease, and cardiac disease should be considered.
