An hour after the product was applied on September 28, 2019, the cat developed ataxia, weakness, an inability to stand, and became sedate. On September 30, 2019, the owner wrapped the cat in a towel and took the cat outside for 2 hours of fresh air. Soon after, the cat developed wheezing. Later that morning, the cat passed away. The owner then contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated that the concentrations of the active ingredients are very low and not expected to cause significant clinical signs. The APSS veterinarian recommended the owner contact her regular veterinarian to discuss a necropsy.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the Zoecon product was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. The APSS veterinarian stated that the flea infestation was considered to have a high likelihood of causing the clinical situation. At the time of this report, a necropsy is not pending.
