The regular veterinarian then contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated that permethrin is a pyrethroid and that dogs tolerate pyrethroids well. The APSS veterinarian also stated that no life threatening signs are expected and that pyrethroids can cause a reluctance to move. The APSS veterinarian further stated that some dogs with treatment (tx) is symptomatic/supportive (sym/supp).The APSS veterinarian recommended the regular veterinarian do a diagnostic evaluation, provide supportive care, provide symptomatic care, give the dog a bath (bathe with liquid dish washing soap (LDWS), rinse with cool water. Can do multiple cool water rinses, or apply cool compresses to application area), monitor for dermatological signs (if severe pruritis or allergic response, take to veterinarian (DVM) for antihistamines and/or steroids), and to call back with questions.
