The dog developed topical erythema at the application site and pruritus the same day and the dog was bathed. The following day the dog became obtunded, dull, depressed, ataxic with delayed reflexes. The dog was administered vitamin E, placed on IV fluids, and hospitalized.

B - Possible: Reported erythema at application site may reflect local dermal sensitivity to the product. Pruritus is not expected to be generalized but rather be linked to the application site. However, it may be a consequence of the uncomfortable feeling caused by the applied product. Reported obtund, dullness and depression may represent a behavioral response to the product sensation. Even though permethrin has the potential to cause slight neurological disorder (e.g. ataxia) in particular susceptible animals, however delayed reflexes are not expected. Considering consistent time to onset, a product connection is deemed to be possible.
