The following was reported: The following was reported: A Rock Pigeon was found by a member of the public along x in x, PE on august 27, 2018. It was seen flapping around, trying to fly approximately 20 mins. before being presented. It was submitted to Dr. x at the x where it was found to be seizuring, lying on its back, body condition score of 3/5 and admitting weight of 351 g. It had injected sclera, a full crop, it was unable to use its legs and continued to seizure, suspect avitrol toxicity. The Pigeon was administered 2 doses of 0.04 ml diazepam and 7 ml of charcoal through gavage. It appeared to stabilize ~10 mins. after diazepam, but found dead in its cage 1 hr. later. The crop content of this pigeon contained 65 ug/g of Avitrol (bird control product) which confirms a state of avitrol toxicosis. The following was reported: The active chemical in Avitrol, 4-Aminopyridine, is known to cause seizures and neurological deficits in birds and will cause sudden death if consumed in sufficient quantities. Birds found dead subsequent to consuming avitrol were found to have between 0.5 and 78 mg/kg of avitrol in their crop content. Reference: Frank et al. 1981.
