A few hours after the product was applied on August 16, 2017, the cat developed symptoms, and the owner took the cat to their regular veterinarian. In the morning on August 17, 2017, the cat passed away, and the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) later in the afternoon. The APSS veterinarian stated that etofenprox is in the pyrethroid family, and is safe to use on cats as a topical agent to treat fleas. The APSS veterinarian also stated that it does not result in tremors or seizure activity that can be seen from other pyrethroids since it is structurally different. Finally, the APSS veterinarian stated that oral exposures often result in hypersalivation, nausea, and vomiting because of the taste and that some animals will hypersalivate just from the odor of the product. The APSS assistant recommended the owner have the regular veterinarian call for information.
