(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms

Immediately post application the dog hid from the owner. The sign resolved within 12 hours. On an unspecified date in 2010, the dog died. No necropsy was performed. No further information is expected. This case is closed. Due to the sensitive nature of the communication, specific relevant event details were not obtained, nor will such be sought. The reason for the initial call was to discuss the use of the product for an active flea infestation on another animal, and not to report the death of the dog.

18. Severity classification (if there is more than 1 possible classification

Death

19. Provide supplemental information here

Reported hiding as a behavioural response to the product sensation or to the product smell may occur. Death is inconsistent with pharmaco-toxicological product profile and experience. Product has wide margin of safety. Oral LD50 in rat 642 mg/kg BW. 20-fold overdosage tolerated by dogs without showing any side effect. In case of suspected product involvement event would have been reported in close proximity and not long time (almost 6 years) after. The reason for the initial call was to discuss the use of Advantage on another animal and not to report the death of the patient. Although some information (e.g health status, age and necropsy) is not available, sufficient information exists to ruled out product involvement. Though time to onset is short for initial reported sign, it seems long for death. Considering serious outcome of the case, a product relation is unlikely.
