On October 6, 2014 the dog ingested the fly bait from a cup in the horse boarding facility feed room. The dog had a prolonged seizure and died on the way to the clinic. The next day, the horse boarding facility owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated methomyl is a carbamate that is rapidly absorbed after ingestion but does not accumulate in the tissues and does not "age" on the receptors like organophosphates (OP's) do so signs are often short-lived. The APSS veterinarian also stated that signs occur very soon after ingestion. The APSS veterinarian finally stated if signs resolve on their own or are successfully treated, prognosis is good and potential complications could be aspiration, from the excessive salivation that may occur.
