(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On November 25, 2014 the dog developed symptoms. On December 17, 2014 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) as he read online that this product was toxic to dogs and cats, leading to death. The APSS veterinarian stated etofenprox is in the pyrethroid family and is safe to use on cats and dogs as a topical agent to treat fleas. The APSS veterinarian also stated it does not result in tremors or seizure activity that can be seen from other pyrethroids, since it is structurally different. The APSS veterinarian stated that this is a safe product, and even in cats, would not cause any seizures or death. If the dog did have a seizure, she could have had respiratory distress and died from that, or if she had an underlying condition (she had not been to a veterinarian for a few years), things like cardiac disease or renal injury can lead to clot formations and potentially death. The APSS veterinarian also stated side effects from spot on products are primarily dermal in nature; animals may have redness or pruritus, possibly hair loss, but not death from it. No necropsy was done.
Death
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation.
