On August 14, 2014 the owner noticed the dog had developed ocular edema, so the owner applied a cold compress (cold wet wash cloth on eyes). On August 15, 2014 the owner noticed the dog had developed aural edema and head shaking, so the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated hyperesthesia or dermal hypersensitivity is possible and anaphylactoid reactions are not expected. The APSS technician recommended diphenhydramine (50 milligrams (mg) tonight), taking the dog to the veterinarian (if swelling does not resolve or if more signs develop) and calling back with questions. The owner called the APSS back on August 15, 2014 to state she was only able to find liquid benadryl and wanted to know how much to give. The APSS veterinarian stated she could give 4 teaspoons (tsp) of 12.5 mg/tsp Diphenhydramine as the only ingredient.
