On September 17, 2013 the owner placed an unspecified flea and tick collar on the cat to treat for fleas. The owner suspected that the cat was also able to lick some of the residue from the collar.

On September 17, 2013 the owner noticed that the cat was symptomatic. A short time later that evening the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the muscarinic and nicotinic signs could also be seen with an oral exposure to the product's ingredients. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner bathe the cat with a liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD), give the cat a taste treat, monitor the cat at home for gastrointestinal (GI) and dermatological signs, and call back with questions.
