On May 8, 2013 through May 9th, 2013 the owner noticed that the dog was symptomatic. That afternoon the owner bathed the dog twice with dog shampoo. Later that afternoon the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that permethrins and pyrethroids can cause a tingling sensation to the skin, as well as redness, dermal irritation, and pruritus. The APSS veterinarian also stated that some animals are more sensitive to the product's ingredients and may experience rolling, hiding, vocalization, clingy behavior, lethargy, reluctance to move, or have an abnormal gait (ex: taking a few steps, stopping, sitting down, and quickly turning toward their tail). The APSS veterinarian said that signs often resolve with bathing and with topical applications of vitamin E and cool compresses, but it may take up to 24 to 72 hours for full recovery. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner bath the dog with liquid dish washing liquid (LDWD) and re-bathe the dog once if needed, apply vitamin E and a cold compress to the application site, and call back with questions.
