On May 2, 2013 the owner noticed that the dog was symptomatic. Later that evening the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner take the dog to the veterinarian; have the veterinarian call for information about the case; manage any vomiting by giving nothing by mouth for 2 hours and then gradually reintroducing water and then food; monitor for gastrointestinal (GI) signs and if they became more than mild, persistent, or contained blood the owner should take the dog to the veterinarian; and call back with questions.
