On September 20, 2013 the owner came home to find the cat had died. Later that day the owner's extended family contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian recommended a necropsy.

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On September 23, 2013 an APSS technician called the owner's extended family and left a voicemail message that stated that the necropsy would need to be submitted that day in order to meet APSS guidelines and to have the owner or the owner's regular veterinarian call back to discuss the possibility of a necropsy.
