The events in this report are historical in nature; therefore many of the details could not be recalled. On an unspecified date in 2007, a 22 year old, spayed, female, Unknown Breed feline, in poor condition, with urinary incontinence, was administered 1 tube of Advantage 18 Topical Solution (Imidacloprid) once topically by the owner. An uspecified amount of time later the cat passed away. No necropsy was performed. The intent of the call to Bayer was not to report the death of this patient but to inquire about product expiration date.
Death
The information regarding the death of the cat was casually provided during an inquiry. The level of information is very low. Unknown onset time of death after last product exposure. Nevertheless death is inconsistent with pharmacotoxicological product profile and experience. Product has wide margin of safety. Oral LD50 in rat 642 mg/kg BW. 24- fold overdosage tolerated by cats without showing any side effect. The cause of death of this geriatric cat is unknown according to case description but probably died due to old age and the condition the cat was in. Unknown previous exposure. Finally, a product relation can be completely excluded.
