(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On an unknown date, a geriatric feline of unknown signalment, in poor condition, was administered 1 tube of Advantage 18 Topical Solution (Imidacloprid) once topically by the owner. On an unknown date in approximately 2011, the cat passed away. It was unknown if a necropsy was performed. MAH comment: The reporting party contacted BVTS exclusively for product expiration information.
Death
The information regarding the death of the cat was casually provided during an inquiry concerning expiry date. Report lacks important information (e.g. patient details, health history, date of exposure, time to onset etc.). Reporting of occurrence more than two years after product application. Occurrence of fatal outcome probably not within close time of product application as would have reported in close proximity. However death is not expected after product application, as inconsistent with pharmaco-toxicological product profile. Product has wide margin of safety. Oral LD50 in rat 642 mg / kg BW. 24-fold overdosage tolerated by cats without showing any side effect. Other underlying causes quite likely in a geriatric cat, however were not reported. In the end, product relation is considered unlikely.
