On June 11, 2013 the owner observed that the cat had died. On June 15, 2013 the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The owner stated that she believed the cat died of flea anemia. The APSS veterinarian stated that the signs were not consistent with product use and that it could take some time for a full-grown cat to succumb to blood loss due to fleas. The APSS veterinarian did not know the state of the cat's prior health.
Death
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have an unknown likelihood of causing the clinical situation and that a flea infestation was considered to have a high likelihood of causing the clinical situation. A necropsy was not available to determine the cause of death.
