7. Describe symptoms and outcome (died, recovered, etc.).

There were a total of 24 colonies in the bee yard. There were 24 affected colonies and 1dead colony (unsure when died).There were 0-500 dead bees per colony observed outside of hive. Bees were actively foraging at the time of the incident. After the adverse effects there was a noticeable decline in foraging. Strongest hive are most severly impacted, too soon to see long term foraging effects, warm sunny day - almost no foraging. Maybe 10% foraging. Bees stuck on outside of hives, not flying. Dandelions and woodlot flowers nearby - foraging sources available. No living bees with pollen on legs. Adult bee symptoms included shaking/trembling/twitching, crawling, and disoriented. Additionally, had observed tongues out, stinging ground, all symptoms are neurological according to bee keeper. Brood symptoms included dead larvae/pupae outside of colony, spotty brood pattern, bees uncapping cells for removal of pupae, overall decline in production. Additionally, all drones (hive 9) unmated queen. Queen symptoms included unusual laying pattern. Additionally, 2012 saw queen cells. Too soon to have dead queen, failure to re-queen. Un-mated queen (hive 9), otherwise ok. Australian queens brought in for Nucs. Had emerged at the time of inspection. Sample of dead bees taken from heavily affected hives had positive detects for clothianidin, demeton-S-methyl-sulfone, thiabendzole, and thiamethoxam.Sample of pollen comb from weak affected hive had positive detects for carbaryl and propamocarb. Sample of lives bees from the least affected hive had positive detects for clothianidin. Sample of pollen comb from least affected hive had positive detects for clothianidin, napropamide, and thiamethoxam. Sample of live bees from weak affected hive had no detected active ingredients. The weather at the time of the incident was sunny, dry, windy off an on, temperature 20-25C, low humidity, dust plumes while planting (beekeeper notes temp inversions). Prior to the incident, frames of bees included an average of 10% good-3 boxes (40-60K bees), 90% low-1-1.5 boxes approx. 20K bees; mostly 2-14 frames of brood, good brood frames averaged 16-18; and 4-5 full supers frames of pollen and honey left in winter dead outs. The following pests were present in the affected bee yard in the past year; chalkbrood, varroa mite, and AFB hive burned in yard 1. Too recent to determine change in general health of affected beeyard after the case. Additional food sources provided to the bees included Sugar Syrup (Fall and Spring), Pollen supplement. In 2012, the following treatments were applied to the hives: formic acid, amitraz and antibiotics. In 2013, the following treatments were applied to the hives: antibiotics. Information on crops located near the beeyards: 20ac of apples was 30m from the beeyard; 20ac of corn was 5m from the beeyard, and was planted on approximately May 2, 2013; 50ac of woodlot was 3m from the beeyard. Other crops in the area include corn, beans, wheat, forages, pasture in the area. Prepping/Planting started May 2nd. All planted by May 9, 2013. Started planting Thursday dead bees by weekend (monday), warmer, fed pollen, Beekeeper is certain it is Neonics. He keeps 9 yards with a total of 66 hives. Considers 60/66 colonies to be affected. Has had no compeletly dead colonies. Yard 5 details - 14 full size colonies - 1 dead: Dandelions were out. 10 nucs brought in from clean area. Queens had emerged at the time of inspections. Nucs had dead bees (approx. 5) in front of each. Hive 1 - strongest hive 'unaffected'. Yard is affected so this hive may have just been symptom free at the time of inspection. Hive 9: weakest hive 'affected'. Hives 3-6: took dead bee composite from these hives. Had bees covering outside of hives and not foraging.
