(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On May 20, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat was grooming excessively, so she bathed the cat once with pet shampoo. Later that morning, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that cats do not tolerate permethrin and that there are individual variations in sensitivity. The APSS veterinarian also stated that signs range from mild dermal hypersensitivity to seizures, and signs can develop from almost immediately up to 72 hours post-exposure. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner monitor the cat for gastrointestinal (GI) signs of vomiting and drooling for 3 days; monitor for central nervous system (CNS) signs of shaking, twitching, and tremors for 3 days; take the cat to the veterinarian; bathe the cat with liquid dish washing detergent (LDWD); and call back with questions.
Moderate
On May 23, 2012 an APSS assistant called the owner to update the case. The owner stated that on the evening of May 20, 2012, shortly after her initial call to the APSS, she bathed the cat with LDWD, monitored for GI and CNS signs, and observed that the cat developed fasciculations. The owner stated that on May 21, 2012 she called her regular veterinarian and, per her regular veterinarian's recommendation, bathed the cat again and clipped his hair. The owner stated that later that day, the cat had fully recovered. Label precaution: Toxic to cats. Cats that actively groom or engage in close physical contact with recently treated dogs may be at risk of harm.
