(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
Owner found the dog had eaten the bait sometime yesterday (5/19). Owner stated the earliest the dog could have eaten the bait is yesterday. The caller was advised that Diphacinone is an anticoagulant. Anticoagulants may lead to a coagulopathy. Clinical signs may not be seen prior to death but may include lethargy, depression, abdominal distension, dyspnea, bruising, epistaxis, and rectal bleeding. Coagulopathies develop 3-5 days post exposure. Advise taking the dog into a vet clinic immediately and handled with care. Called owner to discuss the case. Owner stated that the dog may have been coughing yesterday, the coughing with blood was not noticed until about 30 minutes ago. Owner was on the phone with a local DVM and has a clinic to go into. The DVM stated the dog will need to be treated with K1. Advised owner to have the vet call if they have questions regarding treatment protocols. On May 24, 2012 during a follow up call the owner stated that the dog did not have anymore episodes of coughing with blood seen. The DVM informed the owner it was due to an infection and not from the exposure to the product. The dog was prescribed an antibiotic and Vitamin K1. The owner was unsure of the strength and doses. The dog has continued to exhibit normal activity and behavior since.
