On May 28, 2012 the owner noticed that the cat had tremors and was symptomatic. Later that morning, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the owner take the cat to the veterinarian, have the veterinarian call for information, and call back with questions.

On June 4, 2012 an APSS assistant called the owner to update the case. The owner stated that shortly after calling the APSS on May 28, 2012, she called her regular veterinarian. The owner also stated that on May 29, 2012 she bathed the cat with a horse mane and tail shampoo and later gave the cat 8 ounces of water via a turkey baster; a short time later, the owner observed that the cat died.
