(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On November 20, 2011 the owner bathed the dog with a flea and tick shampoo and later applied a spot on product. About an hour after applying the spot on product, the owner noticed that the dog was vomiting. On the morning of November 21, 2011, the owner woke up and discovered that the dog had died. Later that morning, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that a dermal exposure to the spot on product could cause hyperesthesia or dermal hypersensitivity, ingestion could cause mild vomiting or diarrhea, and that severe signs would not be expected. The APSS veterinarian recommended a necropsy, but the owner declined because the dog had been buried. The APSS veterinarian also referred the owner to the product manufacturer to discuss reimbursement and advised the owner to call back with questions.
Death
The APSS veterinarian stated that the flea and tick shampoo and the spot on product were considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. A follow up was not performed, because additional information was not expected.
