On February 24, 2011, the owner noticed her dog was symptomatic. Later that day, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that shampoos have little residual, so once shampoo is rinsed off the coat, it is gone. The APSS veterinarian also stated that the ingestion of soap can cause mild self-limiting gastrointestinal (GI) upset. The APSS veterinarian stated that resolution of signs was expected within 24 hours and that if signs worsen the owner should take the dog to the veterinarian. The APSS veterinarian recommended the owner give nothing by mouth for two hours and to call back with questions.
