On July 2, 2011 the owner noticed the cat was symptomatic. Later that day, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that methoprene is an insect growth regulator and that topical application of this type of product as per label instructions is not expected to cause clinical signs. The APSS veterinarian also stated that if the product was ingested via grooming, a taste reaction characterized by hyersalivation could occur. The APSS veterinarian stated that if repeated grooming leads to repeated taste reactions, bathing the product off may be necessary. The APSS assistant recommended that the owner should provide a taste treat to the cat and call back with questions.
