(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms
On June 23, 2011 the cat returned home from the woods and the owner noticed the cat was symptomatic. On the morning of June 24, 2011, the cat became inappetent. Later that day, the owner took the cat to the veterinarian, where hypothermia and anemia were diagnosed. Shortly after, the veterinarian contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS) to obtain help. The APSS veterinarian stated that the use of flea and tick sprays as per label is not expected to cause significant clinical signs. The APSS veterinarian also stated that the concentration of active ingredients is typically quite low, so even ingestion of the agent via licking does not pose a significant threat of toxicity. The APSS veterinarian further stated that licking the agent off the fur may cause a taste reaction that typically resolves by feeding a taste treat, and that if recurrent grooming leads to recurrent taste reactions, bathing the product off the animal may be prudent. The APSS veterinarian recommended a diagnostic evaluation and to call back with questions.
Death
The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a doubtful likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On July 1, 2011 the owner contacted the company to update the case. The diagnostic evaluation was implemented at an unknown time. The owner stated that the cat died at the clinic on the morning of June 26, 2011. A necropsy was not available because the cat had already been buried.
