(eg. description of the frequency and severity of the symptoms

On November 30, 2009 the cat had a seizure, so the owner bathed the him. Later that morning, he had another seizure, head tremors, and dilated pupils. The owner took the cat to the veterinarian, who clipped his hair, and then bathed him with surgical scrub. Afterwards, the veterinarian contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated methoprene is an insect growth regulator and may cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested, or skin irritation in a sensitive animal, but no significant signs are expected. The APSS veterinarian recommended permethrin hair testing, fluid therapy, monitoring body temperature, giving methocarbamol, and calling back with questions.

19. Provide supplemental information here

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a medium likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On December 2, 2009 an APSS technician contacted the veterinary clinic to follow up the case. The veterinary staff stated they had followed up with the owner on December 1, 2009. The owner had stated the cat had made a full recovery, but she was unsure when the signs ceased. Submission paperwork was sent to the clinic on November 30, 2009 for the permethrin hair testing. Hair testing results showed the hair sample contained permethrin, methoprene and etofenprox. These results indicate that cat was treated with Zodiac Spot On Flea Control for Cats and Kittens, which contains methoprene and etofenprox, but also was exposed to a permethrin containing product, probably a dog spot on.
