1-22241112: A reporter (veterinarian) called on 04/13/2010 to report the exposure of four 6 week old kittens to a canine flea and tick spray containing the active ingredient Tetrachlorvinphos. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the kittens on 04/12/2010. At an unknown time following product application, 2 kittens were found dead (1st Subform III). The other 2 kittens became ill at an unknown time following product application with lethargy, depression, and anorexia and presented to the reporter. Kitten #1 (2nd Subform III) was unresponsive, hypothermic, and bradycardic at the time of the report. Kitten #2 (3rd Subform III) was severely depressed but responsive, hypothermic, and bradycardic at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that the spray does not contain alcohol but contains an organophosphate. The low dose atropine test method was discussed, as was the need for larger atropine doses of 0.25mg/kg in the treatment of organophosphate toxicity. The reporter was also advised to practice supportive care including warming and maintaining blood glucose. The company's cholinesterase testing policy was discussed. On follow up, the reporter stated that Kitten #1 and Kitten #2 were hospitalized for 2 days. Both kittens had improved significantly from the time of the initial report. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
