1-20810808: A reporter (dog owner) called on 11/23/2009 to report the exposure of his 2 dogs to an insecticide containing the active ingredient Carbofuran. According to the reporter, he was walking his dogs in a rural area on 11/08/2009. The dogs drank out of a ditch and fed on a deer carcass. Within 5-10 minutes, both dogs were salivating profusely and unable to walk. They developed shortness of breath and coughing, and they died before the reporter was able to get them to a veterinarian. A necropsy was performed at the University of (name) and revealed Carbofuran in the dogs' stomachs and livers. The reporter indicated that the Ministry of Environment has gotten involved due to the suspicion that farmers are baiting vermin with the product. The water sources were tested and were negative for Carbofuran. Tests on the deer carcass were pending. The reporter was advised that ingestions should be treated with aggressive decontamination in the acute setting, including emesis, gastric lavage, and activated charcoal. He was also advised that technical grade Carbofuran has a very high order of toxicity. No further information was obtained.
