1-21204861: A reporter (cat owner) called on 12/31/2009 to report the exposure of her 2 cats to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the reporter's mother accidentally applied the product to both cats on 12/30/2009 after they were bathed with an unspecified product. An unknown time following product application, Cat #1 (1st Subform III) started shaking. Cat #2 was asymptomatic at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that the product is not intended to be used on cats and can result in toxicity when used inappropriately. A recommendation was made to decontaminate the cats by bathing them in hand dish soap and transporting them to the veterinarian for evaluation. The reporter was advised that treatment is symptomatic and supportive and includes monitoring for hyperthermia, maintaining hydration, and treating the muscle tremors. On follow up, the reporter stated that Cat #1 was evaluated by a veterinarian, treated with an unknown medication and discharged. Cat #1 was asymptomatic at the time of the follow up. Cat #2 remained asymptomatic. NOTE: This product is not labelled for use on cats.
