1-20245213: A reporter (cat owner) called on 09/29/2009 to report the exposure of his cat to a flea egg and larvae product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the 16 year old cat on 09/25/2009. On 09/26/2009, the cat was lethargic, ataxic, salivating, and having muscle tremors. The cat was evaluated by a veterinarian on 09/26/2009 where it was treated with antibiotics, vitamin B complex, and fluid therapy. The reporter was advised to give the cat baby formula to help with dehydration. The cat was not bathed and was discharged to the reporter. The cat had a seizure and died after returning home on 09/26/2009. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient has little to no toxicity for mammals and is not expected to result in adverse effects. The reporter was advised that symptomatic animals should be bathed in a non-insecticidal shampoo and evaluated by a veterinarian should the signs persist. The veterinarian should rule out other causes for symptoms since adverse effects are not anticipated. A recommendation was made to consider necropsy to determine the cause of death. No further information was obtained. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on aged cats (defined by the company as cats older than 10 years of age).
