1-19408715: A reporter (veterinarian) called on 08/05/2009 to report the exposure of a cat to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Phenothrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the cat on 08/03/2009. At an unknown time following product application, the cat became lethargic. At the time of the report, the cat was receiving subcutaneous fluids and had not yet been bathed. The reporter was advised that concentrated pyrethroid products may result in severe signs if used inappropriately on cats. The signs that may occur were reviewed. A recommendation was made to bathe the cat in a non-insecticidal shampoo. A recommendation was made to provide symptomatic and supportive care including Methocarbamol for tremors and Phenobarbital for seizures. The reporter was advised to monitor the cat for 48-72 hours as signs may recur if treatment is discontinued too soon. On follow up on 08/05/2009, the reporter stated that the cat had been bathed on 08/04/2009 and received subcutaneous fluids. At the time of the follow up, the cat was having tremors. The reporter was advised that Methocarbamol may be used for tremors and doses were discussed. On follow up on 08/10/2009, the reporter stated that the cat's tremors had improved on 08/06/2009 and were resolved by 08/07/2009. The cat was going to be discharged on 08/10/2009. No further information was obtained. NOTE: The canine product is not labelled for use on cats.
