1-19237166: A reporter (dog owner) called on 07/20/2009 to report the exposure of her dog to a flea and tick product containing the active ingredients Methoprene and Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was applied to the dog on 07/19/2009. Within 1 hour, the dog became irritable and was scratching at the application site and vocalizing. The reporter bathed the dog twice with Dawn dish soap and applied Caladryl lotion, but the signs persisted. The reporter was advised that the product may result in minor skin irritation or paraesthesia which can cause an burning or tingling sensation on the skin. True paraesthesia does not result in any visible changes on the skin, but persistent scratching may cause redness and other self-trauma. Dermal irritation may also result in behavioral changes such as agitation, lethargy, rolling on the floor, or vocalization. Paraesthesia typically resolves within 24-48 hours. A recommendation was made to bathe the dog again in hand dish soap and to apply vitamin E oil to the affected area. A recommendation was also made to consult a veterinarian should the signs persist. An attempt at follow up was unsuccessful. No further information was obtained.
