1-19177019: A reporter (cat owner) called on 07/15/2009 to report the exposure of 4 kittens to a canine flea and tick shampoo containing the active ingredients Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide, and NOBD. According to the reporter, the kittens had fleas and a canine product was accidentally purchased and applied to the kittens on 07/12/2009. That same day, all 4 kittens developed malaise, lethargy, and their eyes looked abnormal. Kitten #1 was bathed twice since the signs were initially thought to be related to the fleas. Kitten #1 (1st Subform III) died on 07/13/2009. Kitten #2 (1st Subform III) died on 07/15/2009. Kittens #3 and #4 (2nd Subform III) were being taken to the veterinarian at the time of the report. The reporter was advised that the canine product may result in significant signs if it is used inappropriately on cats. Signs of toxicity were reviewed, and the reporter was advised that immediate evaluation and decontamination by a veterinarian are needed for the remaining 2 kittens. A recommendation was made to consider necropsy for the deceased kittens to try and determine the cause of death. On follow up, the reporter stated that Kittens #3 and #4 were surrendered to the SPCA. He had no further information on their condition. NOTE: This product is not labeled for use on cats.
