On June 14, 2009, the cat was ataxic, depressed, and anorexic. On June 15, 2009, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). She recommended that the pet owner take the cat to the veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information.

On June 23, 2009, the APSS technician spoke to the pet owner. The pet owner stated that she was turned away from two veterinary clinics on June 15, 2009, due to financial constraints. The cat died that same evening. A necropsy was not possible because the body was no longer available.
