16 crows & 2 starlings were collected for post-mortem examination. An additional 8 dead crows & 1 dead opossum were observed but not collected. Two to three more crows were sick & not collected. Majority of animals were found dead. Two to three additional crows were still alive by struggling. RHV called Environment Canada, as part of the BC Interagency Wild Bird Mortality Investigation; carcasses submitted to the BC Min of Agriculture and Lands Animal Health Centre for post-mortem exam; stomach analyzed at Contract Lab for pesticides. BCMAL Animal Health Centre Case [number]; reduced brain cholinesterase (crow pooll: 7.0 umol/min/g; 2 starlings:4.6 &8.6 umol/min/g). Environment Canada examined stomach contents: Crows - Yellowish mush, very slimy & fatty, no distinct items but possibly ground meat bits; Starlings - almost empty, some bits like seed husk like fatty slimy mushed bread. Individual stomach contents/lining were split in half. Two samples (pooled by species) were submitted to Can Test for organophosphate & carbamate pesticides. Methomyl detected in both samples (crow 26.2 ppm (CanTest ID number), starling 1.23ppm (CanTest ID number)).
