1-17157240: A reporter (attending veterinarian) called on 12/24/2008 to report the exposure of a cat to a canine flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Permethrin. According to the reporter, the product was mistakenly applied to the cat on 12/23/2008. The cat developed seizures an unknown time following product application. The cat was still having seizures at the time of the report. The reporter had bathed the cat and started IV fluids. The cat had also been given 20 mg diazepam and methocarbamol. The reporter was calling to ask what else he should do to treat the cat. The reporter was advised that the product is not intended for use on cats. The reporter was advised that treatment for cats with accidental exposure to a canine product includes bathing with hand dish soap and symptomatic and supportive care. There is no reversal agent for the active ingredient. The company's reimbursement policy was faxed per the reporter's request. On follow up, the reporter stated that the cat had gone home on 12/27/2008. The cat was still sedated from the diazepam at the time of discharge but was otherwise asymptomatic. The reporter did not send the cat home with any medications. No further information was obtained.
