On December 29, the owner took the cat to a veterinarian. On December 30, the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS).

The APSS veterinarian stated that the substance was considered to have a low likelihood of causing the clinical situation. On January 6, 2009 the owner called to update the case. The owner was unsure if the cat ate any of a poinsettia that was in the home. She also stated that the cat was licking a fireplace brick. the owner stated that the cat had died on January 6, 2009. Per the owner, the attending veterinarian stated that the cat died due to an undeterminable cause.
