1-16396617: The reporter called on 7/14/08 to report the application of a topical flea and tick product containing the active ingredient Methoprene to her three 3 month old kittens about 1 week previously. According to the reporter, about 2 days prior to the call (7/12/08) two of the kittens had developed anorexia, lethargy, and had excessive bleeding from flea bites. The reporter had tried to wash the product off with ¿¿¿normal¿¿¿ shampoo, but the symptoms had continued. During the call, one of the kittens stopped breathing and passed away (1st subform III). A recommendation was made to take the kittens to a veterinarian for symptomatic and supportive care. It was discussed that the kitten¿¿¿s symptoms would be an unexpected reaction to product use. Several follow-up calls were placed. Contact with the reporter was re-established on 7/17/08. The reporter revealed that the 2nd kitten (2nd subform III) had also passed away and the 3rd had become very weak and lethargic. Veterinary care had not yet been sought. A recommendation was made to seek immediate veterinary care for the 3rd kitten. No additional information is available. Note: The reporter used the product on a total of 12 cats since the beginning of the year.
