1-16513489: The reporter, a Veterinarian, called on 8/12/2008 to report exposure of two cats to a topical flea and tick product labeled for Dogs and Puppies 31-61lbs containing the active ingredient Phenothrin. According the reporter, the product had been applied to a cat (Subform III #1) on 8/11/2008. The cat was presented to his clinic on 8/12/2008 with tremors. The cat had been bathed with hand dishwashing soap. At the time of the call, the reporter stated that the owner would be presenting a second cat (Subform III #2) to the hospital with the same symptoms. The reporter stated that the second cat may have licked the product off the first cat that had been presented. The reporter was advised that the product was not intended for use on felines and confirmed that bathing the cat to remove the product was correct action. A recommendation was made for symptomatic and supportive care for both animals. A follow-up call revealed that both cats were kept at the animal hospital for the day, treated with methocarbamol, and the tremors had ceased by the time of discharge. The cats were discharged with an oral prescription of methocarbamol. The reporter had a follow-up call with the cat owner on 8/16/2008 and both cats were doing well.
