1-16524045: The reporter called on 8/14/2008, to report exposure of his cat to a topical flea product containing the active ingredient Methoprene. According to the reporter, he applied the product to his cat on 8/13/2008. Shortly after application, the cat became agitated, running around, was vocalizing and scratching. The reporter bathed the cat and the symptoms subsided following product removal. The safety profile of the product was discussed in that it has a wide margin of safety and low level of toxicity when used according to labeled directions. It was also relayed that the once applied, the animal may exhibit agitation and scratching until the product dries as the active ingredient in the product can cause an initial tingling sensation. Additionally, post product application, fleas can become more active causing an irritating sensation on the surface of the skin.
