On April 15, 2008 the owner took the animal into the local veterinary clinic where the animal remained until he died on April 19, 2008. The APSS veterinarian suggested a necropsy or hair testing to determine the cause of the animal's death. The hair sample from (name) (location) contained Permethrin. Methoprene and Etofenprox were not detected in the hair sample.

The results of the hair testing indicate the cat was not exposed to the Zodiac Fleatrol Spot On Special Formula for cats and kittens, but was actually exposed to a product which contained Permethrin. This active ingredient is commonly found in Dog Spot On products and is very toxic to cats.
