History: Caller applied product for the first time to his 5 yo, 8 lb, male DSH cat 1 wk ago on Sept 11th, 2007. The cat was fine until two days ago when he became "reclusive" and stopped eating. By yesterday morning, the cat was laying on its side and unable to get up. The cat was taken to the vet hospital immediately. The cat presented with a temp of 96 degrees. BP = Low. Pale MM's. Caller's veterinarian said the cat was in "complete organ failure" and blamed the product. The cat died yesterday while at the vet hospital. The cat has been buried and owner declines necropsy. Assessment: - Discussed with caller that the onset of symptoms and symptoms described are atypical following a dermal exposure and are not expected to be related to product use. - Talked about the wide safety margin and low toxic order of the active ingredient, Phenothrin, and that healthy, adult cats are not expected to be sensitive with normal, routine use. - Empathized with caller over their loss and situation. Given the history provided, I am uncertain as to what may have caused your cat's symptoms and death at this time. Hartz products have a very wide margin of safety and low level of toxicity when used according to the labeled directions. - You may pass this along to your veterinarian and have them call back as needed to discuss toxicity issues.
