(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On approximately 06-Aug-2022, a 0.12 year old, intact, male, Chihuahua/Shih Tzu crossbred dog, of unknown weight, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was bathed using an unknown amount of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo with Oatmeal for Dogs (Phenothrin (Sumithrin)) by the animal owner. This was extra label use due to the age of the pet. Immediately after bathing, the dog was administered 1 spray of Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Spray for Dogs (Methoprene / Tetrachlorvinphos (Rabon)) via the topical route by the animal owner. This was extra label use due to more than one pesticide product used within 30 days of application and due to the age of the pet. On 08-Aug-2022, the dog developed diarrhea. On 10-Aug-2022, the dog developed vomiting and the diarrhea continued. The dog had not been evaluated by a veterinarian and no treatments had been performed. Bathing using liquid dish soap was recommended along with seeking veterinary evaluation. On 12-Aug-2022, during follow-up with the animal owner, they reported the dog was bathed using liquid dish soap on 10-Aug-2022 as directed. The dog continued to decline, developed weakness, and died at home the evening of 10-Aug-2022. The dog was not evaluated by a veterinarian and a necropsy was not performed. No further information was received.

Assessment: Both products contain insecticides in low concentration and have a wide margin of safety in dogs. Though the product was misused in this case (dog below minimum labeled age), severe signs including death are still not expected. If ingested following application, only minor transient GI upset would be expected. Other causes including underlying congenital conditions, dietary indiscretion resulting in toxin ingestion or foreign body obstruction, and infectious disease should be considered given the young age of the dog. Since no veterinary evaluation or diagnostics were performed the relationship between product use and outcome remains inconclusive. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
