(p.ex. description des symptômes tels que la fréquence et la gravité
On 21-May-2020, a 4 year old, 55 pound, neutered, male, German Shepherd dog, in unknown condition, with no known concomitant medical condition, was administered 1 dose of Hartz UltraGuard Rid Flea and Tick Shampoo with Oatmeal for Dogs (Phenothrin (Sumithrin)) via the topical route by the animal owner. This was a first time use of the product. Approximately 2 hours post product administration, the dog suddenly fell over and died after playing in the yard. No other signs were noted prior to death. The dog was not evaluated by a veterinarian and no treatments were performed. The dog was buried so no necropsy was performed.

Assessment: The active ingredient is present in low concentration in this product and has a wide margin of safety in dogs. If ingestion occurred during bathing, only minor GI upset would be expected. Sudden death is not anticipated. Other causes including underlying heart disease and rupture of a right atrial hemangiosarcoma should be considered in this case. This condition is not an uncommon cause of sudden death in otherwise apparently healthy German Shepherd dogs. The information contained in this report is based on self-reported statements provided to the registrant during telephone Interview(s). These self-reported descriptions of an incident have not been independently verified to be factually correct or complete descriptions of the incident. For that reason, information contained in this report does not and cannot form the basis for a determination of whether the reported clinical effects are causally related to exposure to the product identified in the telephone interviews.
