On the morning of September 21, 2018, the cat developed ataxia and was blinking rapidly. The owner then contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated that cats do not tolerate permethrin and that there are some individual variations in sensitivity. The APSS veterinarian also stated that signs range from mild paresthesia, ataxia, and tremors to seizures and that signs can develop from almost immediately up to 72 hours post-exposure. The APSS technician recommended the owner take the cat to a veterinarian and have the veterinarian call for information. About an hour later, the emergency veterinarian called the APSS to continue the case. The emergency veterinarian stated that the cat had developed tremors and that they placed an intravenous catheter (IVC). The emergency veterinarian also stated they were giving the cat a bath with dish soap. The APSS veterinarian recommended that the emergency veterinarian monitor the cat at the veterinary facility (until resolution of clinical signs), monitor for central nervous system signs (ataxia, tremors, seizures), provide fluid therapy (intravenous fluids (IVF)), manage tremors (methocarbamol 50-150 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) slow intravenous (IV) to effect, if that is not working, can try midazolam constant-rate infusion (CRI), acepromazine, phenobarb, or propofol), monitor body temperature, provide thermoregulation, do a chemistry profile (if severe signs are seen), provide symptomatic care, provide supportive care, and to call back with questions.
