On June 30, 2016, the cat developed pale mucous membrane color, lethargy, and agonal breathing. The owner took the cat to the veterinary clinic where it was rinsed, and a short time later, the attending veterinary staff contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated that with the spot on and the shampoo, the risk is for dermal paresthesia ("pins and needles feeling"). The APSS veterinarian recommended monitoring at veterinary facility, fluid therapy, complete blood count, chemistry profile, monitor electrolytes, oxygen, diphenhydramine, corticosteroid, symptomatic and supportive care, call back with questions. The APSS veterinarian also stated unlikely related to agents unless some underlying issue (such as flea anemia).

The APSS veterinarian stated that the spot on substance was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. The APSS veterinarian stated that the shampoo was not considered to be related to causing the clinical situation. On July 4, 2016 the veterinary staff contacted the APSS to provide an update and noted the cat died in the clinic shortly after speaking with us on June 30, 2016. She further noted the owner declined necropsy and took the cat home to bury it. Necropsy is not available.
