1-41332845 - The reporter, a pet owner, indicated that his two cats were exposed to a spot-on insecticide containing the active ingredient methoprene. The pet owner applied the product to his 11-year-old, 5 pound, female domestic short haired cat and to his 2-year-old, 6 pound, female domestic short haired cat about one week prior to initial contact with the registrant to treat a severe flea infestation. Shortly after the product was applied the reporters 11 year old cat stopped eating and drinking. Later that night the cat was meowing, had labored breathing, stopped moving and became unresponsive. The cat died enroute to the veterinary clinic. A few days prior to the reporters initial call the reporters 2-year-old cat stopped eating and drinking, she became lethargic and was walking sideways. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient in the product has little to no toxicity in mammals. The described symptoms may be secondary to flea bite anemia. On follow-up call, two days later, the reporter indicated that his 2 year old cat died the morning after his initial call. He had not sought veterinary care. No additional information is available.
