While lathering the shampoo, the cat started heavy breathing, panting, and became distressed. An hour later the cat had an abnormal tongue color, vomited (twice - little piece of wet cat food), developed weakness and ataxia. Later that evening, the owner took the cat to the veterinarian. The cat died while at the emergency clinic, so the owner contacted the Animal Product Safety Service (APSS). The APSS veterinarian stated mild dermal paresthesia may be seen in a rare situation and ingestion may cause foaming, vomiting, diarrhea. The APSS veterinarian also stated acute distress and death would not be expected. The APSS veterinarian discussed that cardiomyopathy may be involved and recommended a necropsy. The APSS veterinarian recommended the owner have the emergency veterinarian call for information. A bit later, the emergency veterinarian called the APSS to discuss the necropsy. The APSS veterinarian provided the forms and information for the necropsy to the clinic.
