1-38388349 - The reporter, a pet owner, indicated that her cat was exposed to an insecticidal spot-on product containing the active ingredient methoprene. The pet owner applied the product to her 5-month-old, female, 3.5 pound cat, as a flea preventative, four days prior to initial contact with the registrant. Right after the product was applied the cat began grooming the application site so the pet owner spot bathed the area to prevent continued ingestion. The following day the cat was lethargic and vomited and by the evening the cat was listless and had vomited multiple times. That evening the cat was brought to the emergency veterinary clinic where it was treated with subcutaneous fluids and a Cerenia injection. The cat was sent home that night and once home it began to drool profusely and continued to do so all night. The following morning the reporter brought the cat to her regular veterinarian where it was treated with a Vetalog injection and sent home. The cat did not eat all day and was falling asleep in its food. Three days after product application the cat was lying in bed with the reporter when it started gasping, spasmed for a brief period and then passed away. The reporter was advised that the active ingredient in the product is an insect growth regulator with a wide margin of safety and the described symptoms are not expected from normal use of the product. A necropsy could help determine the cause of death but the cat had already been buried. No further information is available.
